Introduction to Building Resiliency & Preventing Compassion Fatigue

Foundations of Compassion   (6 Hours)

IMG_0107When faced with the overwhelming idea of helping a friend, neighbor, or family member in crisis, many people feel ill-equipped. Thoughts of “I don’t know what to say,” or “I don’t know what to do,” often prevent them from reaching out to hurting people when they need it most.

This introductory level course is designed as a stand-alone to enable you to effectively help hurting people, or as the foundation course to becoming a Compassionate Reach or Sound of Life Radio Volunteer or Chaplain.

What you will learn:

  • Understand the meaning of “Ministry of Presence”
  • Demonstrate Active Listening skills
  • Know what practical help is needed for individuals in crisis and how to provide it
  • Understand the process of grief, and physical and emotional impairment during times of loss
  • Importance of self-care

 

Spiritual & Psychological First Aid               (13 Hours over 2 days)

Providing effective emotional and spiritual care to individuals, families, and communities following critical incidents and in times of crisis requires special training, skills and understanding the unique role of the crisis responder. This course seeks to prepare front line helpers to meet the emotional and spiritual needs of survivors by providing a basic understanding of: the ministry of presence; connecting; basic assessment skills, appropriate intervention; and developing an ongoing care plan and referral.
What you will learn:

  • Articulate an understanding of the ministry of presence and companioning.
  • Define the essential elements of connecting and communicating with people in crisis.
  • Demonstrate assessment skills for determining emotional and spiritual needs.
  • Demonstrate essential interventions to help stabilize people in crisis.
  • Link those served with existing community support services and develop a care plan.

 

 

Introduction to Building Resiliency & Preventing Compassion Fatigue

Caring for people in a crisis or disaster is physically, emotionally, and spiritually draining and can negatively impact a person’s health and well-being. This course will help you develop a self-care plan to avoid compassion fatigue or burn out.

You will learn

  • Signs and symptoms of compassion fatigue and burnout
  • Self-care assessment tests
  • Evaluate personal resistance and resilience to fatigue and burn out
  • Building a self-care plan
